dress up in you

Second Skin: India and Irene from StyleLikeU on Vimeo.

“The formation of assumptions, a natural human impulse, often lead us astray.” Two girls, India and Irene, who’ve never met, swap outfits for a day and they describe their impressions of the girl to whom these clothes belong and how it feels to literally step into someone else’s shoes!

I don't think I can adequately express how much I love StyleLikeU. They continue to explore personal style and explore the sentimental values and memory associations we have with particular items of clothing, how our way of dress sometimes is an armour that protects you against being judged or stereotyped, sometimes the clothes we wear evokes or embodies a character that enhances a part of our personality or sometimes our sartorial choices are simply just a true reflection of ourselves. For some people getting dressed in the morning is a very conscious statement to the world, for others they couldn't care less! Either way all the people SLU interview are completely comfortable in their own skin and their style, whether they realise or not, is like an arm or a leg; without it they feel naked.

I've dabbled in many different styles of dress throughout my teen years like I was auditioning for parts in a play I didn't understand :P Sometimes I think you have to try things on just to know what's not you. At the same time I feel like I could wear anything and be fine with it, maybe that shows I don't know myself? Or is it that I'm so comfortable with myself I don't need to use clothes to show it? Ahhhh existential crisis! Though I was surrounded by super stylish people in New York, living out of home for 6 months with a super tight budget made me learn to live with less and I think that that has really impacted my view of fashion.I still adore prints and crazy colours and really extravagant looking pieces but my wardrobe these days consists of neutrals or pastels and simple shapes that can be worn together.  Maybe I'm just growing up? Who knows!

Wow. Irene is gorgeous. I LOVE her style. They all seem kind of stoned/out of it though... StyleLikeU is fab, nonetheless. X

I loved watching this on your tumblr, the idea is something I'm sure we all have thought about. How protective clothing is for one, well, for the fashion conscious mostly. I found it quite offensive how severely judgemental India's friends were. And it was a lot of cringing every time they spoke and judged their idea of 'Irene'. Hehe I guess that was the point of the video.

For me I think you are comfortable wearing anything when you are comfortable with yourself, people who 'don't care' are comfortable with themselves or their dress-self at least, that's why they couldn't care less... I guess... But reaching a point in security is also great, because you can really explore the things you are curious to wear, be crazy.

I thought both of them looked really great in their own clothes and each other's, ultimately – they both dressed 'well'. It was maybe a little weird for me to see them be completely insecure over it, a little close minded almost in terms of 'style' and other people. (aah, first world issues.) Then again I wasn't put in that situation, if it was a tradie's outfit and I had to go to work as a photographer or to baby sit, have a job interview (not for trade), then I'd be real worried!
